Labour/ Employee Rights according to Islam

Islam upholds the dignity and rights of workers, ensuring they are treated with fairness, respect, and compassion. The teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasize just treatment of employees and the importance of fulfilling their rights without delay or exploitation.

1. Right to Fair Wages

  • Workers are entitled to timely and agreed-upon compensation. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Give the worker his wages before his sweat dries.” (Ibn Majah)

2. Right to Just Treatment

  • Employers must treat employees with kindness, dignity, and fairness—avoiding harshness, abuse, or unjust demands.

3. Right to Safe and Reasonable Working Conditions

  • Islam encourages safe, humane, and manageable work environments. Tasks should not be overly burdensome or harmful to one’s physical or mental health.

4. Right to Rest and Worship

  • Employees have the right to breaks, rest, and the ability to perform religious obligations such as salah (prayer) during working hours.

5. Right to Mutual Respect and Clear Agreements

  • Employment terms should be clearly defined and mutually agreed upon to avoid conflicts. Both parties are bound by honesty and transparency in the agreement.
